The Office of the Prosecutor GeneralText version

The central administration of the prosecution service

The Office of the Prosecutor General maintains the operational conditions of the entire prosecution service as a regular central administration agency, and functions as the staff of the Prosecutor General. This involves numerous tasks in personnel management and finance, public relations, training and development, as well as international relations and international legal assistance. In all, the Office has 36 employees. For an expedient performance of its tasks, the Office has been arranged into units.

Criminal matters with wider significance

The Office of the Prosecutor General has also its own cases, where its staff makes the evaluations and prosecutes the cases in any of the courts in Finland. Usually these are cases with wider significance to the community. The district prosecutors nonetheless carry out the greater part of the prosecution work.

The State Prosecutors are competent to operate anywhere in the country

13 State Prosecutors, who are competent to operate anywhere in the country, perform the prosecution tasks referred to above. The State Prosecutors handle also those that are heard by the Courts of Appeal as the first instance. These include e.g. the charges against certain high-ranking public officials for offences in office.
